Product Photography Guidelines
Great product photos help your products sell. Follow these simple guidelines to make your listings look their best on MakerPal.
Background
Use a clean, simple background. A plain white or light grey surface works best. Avoid busy patterns or cluttered spaces. If you want a lifestyle shot, keep the props minimal and let your product be the focus.
Lighting
Natural light is your best friend. Shoot near a window during the day. Avoid direct sunlight, which creates harsh shadows. Overcast days give the softest, most even light. If you shoot in the evening, use two lamps on opposite sides to reduce shadows.
Angles
Take at least 4 photos per product: front view, back view, a detail/close-up shot, and one lifestyle or scale shot (the product in use or next to a common object for size reference). For jewellery and accessories, include a photo being worn.
Resolution and size
Upload images at least 2000 x 2000 pixels. Shopify works best with square (1:1) images. Make sure your photos are sharp and in focus. Blurry photos lose trust.
Consistency
Try to keep the same style across all your products. Same background, same lighting setup, same angle for the main photo. This makes your maker profile look professional and helps customers browse your products easily.
What to avoid
No watermarks or logos on your photos. No heavy filters or colour edits. No screenshots from social media. No stock photos. Every image should be an original photo of your actual product.
Quick checklist
Before you upload, check: Is the background clean? Is the lighting even? Is the image sharp? Is it at least 2000px wide? Do you have at least 4 angles? Does it match your other product photos?
